New Details on the Akane-banashi Anime: What Was Discussed at the AnimeJapan 2026 Stage?

Akane-banashi, one of the most beloved series in Weekly Shonen Jump, met with its fans at the AnimeJapan 2026 event held on March 28 as it prepares to step into the anime world. The lead voice actors of the series made sincere statements about their characters and the atmosphere of the story ahead of the grand premiere on April 4, 2026. The event was attended by star names such as Anna Nagase (Akane Osaki), Nobunaga Shimazaki (Maikeru Arakawa), Chiaki Kobayashi (Koguma Arakawa), Yohei Azakami (Kyoji Arakawa), and Seiichiro Yamashita (Guriko Arakawa).
During the stage event, the cast shared their impressions from when they first read the series. In particular, Nobunaga Shimazaki stated that the series has a unique "glow and sharpness" (known as 'gira' in Japanese), expressing how impressed he was by the energy of the story. Chiaki Kobayashi and Seiichiro Yamashita shared similar views, noting their admiration for how rakugo, a traditional art form, is combined with a modern shonen narrative in such an impressive way. The voice cast emphasized that they worked with great meticulousness to convey the depth of the characters and the emotional intensity of the rakugo scenes into the anime.
Written by Yuki Suenaga and illustrated by Takamasa Moue, Akane-banashi tells the story of young Akane Osaki, who strives to climb to the top of the traditional art of storytelling after her father is unfairly expelled from the world of rakugo. The series has achieved great success since it began publication in 2022, receiving praise from giants like One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda and Evangelion director Hideaki Anno. It has also proven its worth by ranking high in prestigious awards such as the Next Manga Awards. The fact that professional rakugoka Kikuhiko Hayashiya serves as a consultant for the realism of the rakugo scenes is seen as one of the most important elements enhancing the quality of the series.
The technical team behind the anime is also quite strong. The production, prepared by Studio ZEXCS, is directed by Ayumu Watanabe, who has worked on successful projects such as Children of the Sea and Summer Time Rendering. The music is composed by Akio Izutsu. The series, which will start on TV Asahi in Japan on April 4, will meet viewers worldwide via Netflix. Blending traditional Japanese culture with modern drama, this production aims to both introduce the art of rakugo to new generations and offer viewers an unforgettable coming-of-age story.
