Grave of the Fireflies Returns to Netflix Japan on July 15

Grave of the Fireflies (Grave of the Fireflies), directed by Isao Takahata and considered one of Studio Ghibli's most touching works, will be available to stream again on Netflix in Japan starting July 15, 2025. According to Natalie's report, the film was previously on the platform but was removed; now, with its return, special events are also planned.
Grave of the Fireflies was released in 1988 and adapted from Akiyuki Nosaka's semi-autobiographical novel. Set in the final days of World War II, the story tells the struggle for survival of two siblings – Seita and Setsuko – who lose their family due to bombings. The film portrays the devastating impact of war on civilians without resorting to any censorship or emotional manipulation. In this respect, it is considered not just an animation, but also a powerful anti-war masterpiece.
According to Netflix's announcement, a composition project (感想文企画) will be launched alongside the film's re-release. Viewers can share texts written inspired by the film. Additionally, a support program for special school screenings will be implemented. This initiative is especially important for younger generations to understand the true face of war and to develop historical awareness.
Although Studio Ghibli's archive has been released in many countries under the previous agreement with Netflix, the catalog in Japan has occasionally changed. The return of Grave of the Fireflies is an unmissable opportunity, especially for anime fans who love anti-war themes. The film will be available only in the Japan region starting July 15; the situation in other countries has not yet been clarified. Nevertheless, this move is seen as an important step towards solidifying Takahata's masterpiece's permanent place on digital platforms.
