Kyoto Animation's New Masterpiece Sparks of Tomorrow Arrives on July 5th: Here Are the First Details!

One of the most prestigious studios in the anime world, Kyoto Animation (KyoAni), has shared exciting details for its new original project, Sparks of Tomorrow (known in Japanese as 20 Seiki Denki Mokuroku). According to the official announcement, the series will premiere on July 5, 2026, and will be available to viewers worldwide exclusively on Netflix. The new trailer and key visual, unveiled at the AnimeJapan 2026 event, once again showcase the studio's signature enchanting visuals and emotional depth.
Set in an alternate Kyoto at the beginning of the 20th century, the story focuses on a smoky world where steam engines reign supreme and electricity is still just a dream. Our protagonist, Kihachi Sakamoto (voiced by Yuma Uchida), goes in search of the "20th Century Electric Catalog," which he wrote as a child and which predicts the future of electricity, when his path crosses with Inako Momokawa (voiced by Sora Amamiya), a religious young girl trying to escape her father's pressure. The duo's journey to find this mysterious book symbolizes not only a technological revolution but also leaving behind the regrets of the past and a rebirth.
The technical staff of the series is as remarkable as its story. Sitting in the director's chair is Minoru Ota, who previously served as an episode director for productions such as Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S and Sound! Euphonium; this project will be Ota's first experience as a lead director. While Tatsuhiko Urahata pens the screenplay, the character designs are entrusted to Kohei Okamura. On the music side, the opening track "Eureka Evrika" will be performed by Luna Goami, while the ending theme will be performed by the popular indie project Ginger Root. This international collaboration also highlights KyoAni's global vision.
Sparks of Tomorrow is not just a new series for Kyoto Animation, but also a symbol of a major comeback. First announced in 2018, the project was indefinitely suspended due to the tragic events of 2019. The fact that this is one of the first full-scale original series the studio has brought to life after this difficult period makes this production much more meaningful for fans. With background drawings reminiscent of impressionist paintings and meticulous animation craftsmanship, the series is described by the studio as a "new frontier." Ahead of the grand opening on July 5th, a world premiere tour covering Japan and North America is planned for June.
