Live-Action High School Family Film Delayed: New Release Date January 8

The live-action film adaptation of Ryo Nakama's beloved manga High School Family: Kokosei Kazoku has faced an unexpected delay. According to Anime News Network, the film, previously scheduled for release in fall 2026, has been delayed to January 8, accompanied by a new teaser visual. Although the studio has not yet made an official statement regarding the reason for the delay, fans have greeted this development with curiosity.
The manga was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 2020 to 2022 and attracted attention particularly for its absurd comedy. The story follows a couple (father and mother) who look like high school students trying to live a normal family life. The adventures of these actually adult parents in a high school setting garnered great interest from both young and adult readers. The series has a total of 7 tankōbon volumes and has sold over 1 million copies in Japan.
The first announcement of the live-action adaptation was made in 2025, but the cast and director had not yet been officially announced. However, according to industry sources, the film is expected to feature young and popular Japanese actors in leading roles. The film will add another to the increasing number of manga adaptations in Japanese cinema in recent years. Following the success of productions such as Tokyo Revengers and Kingdom, such adaptations have become more attractive for studios.
In the teaser visual, silhouettes of the film's main characters and the date 'January 8' stand out. Although fans are saddened by the delay, they note that the new date, falling at the beginning of 2027, offers a chance to reach a wider audience during the New Year season. It is likely that the production team will use this time for higher quality post-production. The full cast and a new trailer are expected to be released in the coming months. High School Family fans can already mark January 8, 2027 on their calendars.
