90-Second Trailer Released for GTO's New Series: 50-Year-Old Onizuka Seen for the First Time

The long-awaited moment has arrived for GTO fans. The 90-second trailer for the new live-action series based on Fujisawa Toru's classic manga has been officially released. The most striking detail is that Takashi Sorimachi, who originally played Onizuka in the 1998 series, now portrays the character at age 50. The trailer showcases Sorimachi's interpretation of the 'aged crazy teacher' with his graying hair and matured demeanor.
As fans will recall, Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO) was a manga series published from 1997 to 2002, reaching millions of readers worldwide. The story follows Eikichi Onizuka, a former motorcycle gang leader, who becomes a teacher at a high school and changes his students' lives. Following the manga's success, a live-action series starring Sorimachi aired in 1998, and an anime adaptation aired in 1999–2000. The new series is set 26 years after the original live-action drama and focuses on Onizuka deciding to return to teaching as he approaches retirement.
The trailer not only introduces Onizuka's new look but also the atmosphere of the series. The footage shows familiar school hallways, a new generation of students, and hints of Onizuka's signature 'wild and crazy' teaching style. Sorimachi's performance in particular evokes nostalgia for old fans while sparking curiosity about how the character has changed over the years. Although Fuji TV, which is producing the series, has not yet announced a release date, the trailer's release indicates that production is in its final stages.
This new adaptation aims to bring the GTO universe to the youth issues of the 2020s. As in the original manga, themes of bullying, family pressure, and friendship are expected to be at the forefront. Fujisawa Toru's manga series remains popular today and may gain a new readership thanks to the new series. Old fans are eagerly awaiting Sorimachi's return as Onizuka. More details about the series (release date, cast, and episode count) may be announced in the coming weeks. This new chapter of GTO seems to bring both nostalgia and a fresh breath.
