Towards the Finale of the "Rascal Does Not Dream" Series: New Movie Release Date and Emotional Details Revealed!

The long-awaited day for "Rascal Does Not Dream" fans is approaching! The release date for Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend (Seishun Buta Yarou wa Dear Friend no Yume wo Minai), which will crown the finale of the series, was officially announced at the AnimeJapan 2026 event. The first trailer for the film, which will meet moviegoers in Japan on October 16, and special character illustrations featuring Sakuta Azusagawa and Mai Sakurajima were also shared.
The voice cast attending the event provided emotional moments for the fans. In particular, Kaito Ishikawa, who voices the lead character Sakuta Azusagawa, made heartfelt statements about the series nearing its end. Expressing his deep commitment to his role, Ishikawa emphasized the strength of his bond with the character by saying, "I don't want to hand this role over to anyone!" He was joined on stage by Asami Seto (the voice of Mai Sakurajima), Aya Yamane (Ikumi Akagi), and Manaka Iwami (Miori Mito).
This new film will bring the final chapters of the original light novel series, written by Hajime Kamoshida and concluded with its 15th volume in 2024, to the big screen. The production, which serves as the climax of the "University Student Arc," will continue from where the Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Claus series, released in 2025, left off. Fans of the series will witness Sakuta's final struggle with "Puberty Syndrome" and how his relationship with Mai will reach its conclusion.
On the production side, familiar and trusted names remain. The animation studio CloverWorks is back, and Soichi Masui, known from previous installments of the series, sits in the director's chair. The screenplay is written by Masahiro Yokotani, while the character designs once again bear the signature of Satomi Tamura. This journey, which has been ongoing since the first TV anime in 2018, is preparing to bid farewell to its audience with this grand finale in October.
