Sparks of Tomorrow Anime Premieres July 5th: A New Masterpiece from Kyoto Animation is Coming

One of the most beloved studios in the anime world, Kyoto Animation, is making a magnificent return with its new project Sparks of Tomorrow (known in Japanese as 20 Seiki Denki Mokuroku). According to the official announcement, the series will premiere on July 5, 2026, and will be available to audiences worldwide exclusively on Netflix. The newly released teaser trailer showcases the series' mesmerizing visuals while also debuting the opening theme "Eureka Evrika," performed by Luna Goami, and the ending song by Ginger Root.
The story is set in the early 20th century, in a version of Kyoto that is more advanced than the history we know. In this alternative world, where steam power dominates and the city is constantly covered in a cloud of smoke, the "Electric Age" is nothing more than a dream. Our protagonist, Kihachi Sakamoto (voiced by Yuma Uchida), is a young man who suppressed the dreams of electricity he built with his brother after a tragic loss. When his path crosses with Inako Momokawa (Sora Amamiya), a religious girl who has buried her own dreams in her heart, the duo embarks on an epic adventure to uncover the secrets of the "20th Century Electric Catalog."
This project holds emotional significance for Kyoto Animation, as it is not only a new anime but also the first major original production the studio has completed since the tragic events of 2019. The director's chair is occupied by Minoru Ota, an experienced member of the studio, making his directorial debut. The fact that the series has already been selected for the TV Films category at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2026 provides major hints about the quality of the production. Character designs and animation direction have been entrusted to Kohei Okamura, whom we know from series such as Free! and Sound! Euphonium.
Another development exciting fans is the world premiere tour to be held before the series' release. Covering Japan (June 14th at Shinjuku Piccadilly), the United Kingdom, Thailand, and North America, this tour will offer lucky viewers the chance to see the series early. With the addition of names like Yo Taichi, Natsumi Kawaida, Kazuki Ura, and Daisuke Hirakawa, the voice cast has turned into a star-studded ensemble. If you love steampunk atmospheres and stories with emotional depth, mark July 5th on your calendars now!
