The Mahouka Series Heads to the Big Screen: Release Date and LiSA Surprise for the "Yotsuba Succession Arc" Film!

The Irregular at Magic High School (Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei) fans, the moment you've been waiting for has arrived! One of the most critical story arcs in the series, the Yotsuba Succession Arc, is heading to the big screen accompanied by a massive trailer and a new song from the series' iconic artist, LiSA. According to the official announcement made at the AnimeJapan 2026 event, the highly anticipated film will be released in theaters in Japan on May 8, 2026.
This new film is based on the 16th volume of the original light novel series written by Tsutomu Sato and uncovers the truths behind that mysterious letter left at the end of the third season. When Tatsuya Shiba and Miyuki Shiba are invited to the Yotsuba clan's New Year's celebration, they enter a turning point where not only the balance of power within the family but their own destinies are set to change. The released trailer offers clues as to how deep the story will go, featuring shocking confessions made by Yotsuba Maya to Tatsuya that will shake the siblings' relationship to its core.
LiSA, who has become synonymous with the series' musical identity, returns for the third time with her new song "YES", prepared specifically for this film. Having previously created the legendary first season opening "Rising Hope" and the third season's "Shouted Serenade," the artist returns this time with a piece she describes as "crying out frozen emotions." The film is directed by Jimmy Stone, who proved his success in the third season, while animation production is once again handled by the 8bit studio. The music is entrusted to the master Taku Iwasaki, who defines the series' unique atmosphere.
The Mahouka universe has been among the most popular works in the anime world since 2011 with its complex structure where technology and magic intertwine. The Yotsuba Succession Arc serves as a true turning point for fans, not only with its high-budget action scenes but also by solving the series' biggest mysteries and bringing character development to its peak. Following a special preview in Tokyo on April 28, the film, which will meet audiences in May, will also serve as an important bridge for future sequel stories such as Magian Company.
