Crunchyroll Store Discontinues Physical Manga and Light Novel Sales

Crunchyroll, known as one of the leading platforms in the anime and manga world, surprised fans with a recent change to its store. The Crunchyroll Store has removed physical manga and light novel sales and made the store exclusive to Mega Fan and Ultimate Fan subscription tiers. This change directly affects how and where fans purchase these products.
According to Anime News Network, with the update to the Crunchyroll Store, the physical manga and light novel categories have been completely removed. While the store is now only open to subscribers, this represents a significant loss, especially for collectors. Crunchyroll previously offered a wide range of manga and light novels in its store; however, with this decision, it appears to have shifted to a strategy focused on digital content and subscriptions.
This development can be seen as part of Crunchyroll's digitalization policy in recent years. The platform acquired Funimation in 2021, consolidating its anime streaming services, and later expanded its digital manga library through a partnership with Viz Media. The removal of physical products from the store is interpreted as a signal that the company is moving toward a fully digital ecosystem. However, this decision has caused disappointment among fans who value physical copy collecting.
The Crunchyroll Store being opened only to Mega and Ultimate Fan subscribers also aligns with the company's strategy to strengthen its subscription base. Mega Fan is offered at $7.99 per month, while Ultimate Fan is priced at $14.99. These subscriptions provide benefits such as ad-free viewing, discounts, and access to special events. However, with the store now only open to these users, fans who rely on free memberships are deprived of store benefits.
This change once again highlights the declining role of physical media in the anime and manga industry. With the rise of digital platforms, physical products are being replaced by digital copies and subscription services. Crunchyroll's move could also serve as an example for other platforms in the industry. Fans' reactions are spreading quickly on social media; some criticize the decision, while others argue that digital content is more accessible.
In the coming period, it remains to be seen how Crunchyroll will continue this strategy and whether it will take any steps back regarding physical products. The company's lack of an official statement creates uncertainty among fans. However, this development is being recorded as an indication that anime and manga consumption habits are rapidly changing toward digitalization.
