Gundam Creator Yoshiyuki Tomino and Manga Pioneer Machiko Satonaka Receive Major Honor from Japan

The Japanese government has honored two legendary figures who have shaped the anime and manga industry as part of the 2026 Spring Conferment of Decorations. Yoshiyuki Tomino, creator of the Mobile Suit Gundam series, and Machiko Satonaka, a pioneer of the shōjo manga world, have been awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, one of Japan's most prestigious honors. According to the official announcement made on April 29, this prestigious honor will be presented to the artists at an official ceremony to be held on May 12.
84-year-old Yoshiyuki Tomino is considered one of the figures who fundamentally changed the history of anime. Tomino, who began his career in 1963 as a script and storyboard writer for Astro Boy (Tetsuwan Atom) at Osamu Tezuka's studio Mushi Production, made his true revolution in 1979 with Mobile Suit Gundam. He laid the foundation for modern science fiction anime by transforming the fantastic genre known as "Super Robot" until that time into the "Real Robot" genre, which is more realistic, has political depth, and questions the gray areas of war. Tomino was previously named a Person of Cultural Merit in 2021, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon an artist in Japan.
Another giant of the manga world, 78-year-old Machiko Satonaka, played a critical role in the development of the shōjo (aimed at young girls) manga genre. The artist, who made her professional debut in 1964 with Pia no Shōzō while still a high school student, has produced over 500 works throughout her career. Known for works such as Ashita Kagayaku and Aries no Otome-tachi, Satonaka has been a pioneering figure who not only drew but also defended the rights of the industry and raised the status of manga in society through roles such as the presidency of the Japan Cartoonists Association. Like Tomino, she was also named a Person of Cultural Merit in 2023.
This award is one of the greatest proofs that anime and manga are seen in Japan not only as a means of entertainment but also as a national cultural heritage and a diplomatic power. The Order of the Rising Sun has previously been awarded to world-renowned names such as Hayao Miyazaki, Shigeru Miyamoto, and Rumiko Takahashi. The addition of Tomino and Satonaka to this list means that the decades-long efforts of both artists are being recognized at the highest level by the state. For fans, this news has been a source of great pride as these names, who shaped their childhoods and imaginations, receive the respect they deserve.
