Hajime Ueda's Personal Exhibition 'USO' Opens in Tokyo

The highly anticipated personal exhibition "USO" of Hajime Ueda, the character designer of cult works like FLCL (Fooly Cooly) and also a talented manga artist, opens its doors on June 13 at the Déesse space caiman shibuya gallery in Tokyo's Shibuya district. The exhibition is organized in two periods: the first period can be visited from June 13 to June 28, and the second period from July 3 to July 20.
In this event, where works reflecting Ueda's unique style will be exhibited, a particularly notable point is the decoration changes and additions of new works throughout the exhibition. The artist aims to create a different atmosphere in each period. According to Japanese sources, the exhibition will also include works by Ueda that have never been exhibited before. Visitors can come to the exhibition in two separate time periods and experience a completely different experience in both the first and second periods.
Hajime Ueda is especially known for his work at GAINAX studio in the early 2000s. Ueda, who drew the unforgettable characters of FLCL, is also the author of mangas such as Dead Dead Demon's Dededede Destruction and Nijigahara Holograph. The artist's unique watercolor technique and melancholic narrative have created a loyal fan base in both the anime and manga worlds. "USO" (a Japanese word meaning "lie") points to this thematic depth with its title.
This exhibition stands out as one of Ueda's most comprehensive personal exhibitions in recent years. His previous exhibition "Tokei", which opened in Kyoto in 2022, received great interest. Now, with this new exhibition in Tokyo, the artist aims to reach especially new generations of fans. The exhibition is free and open to everyone; however, due to limited gallery space, entry control may be implemented during peak times. With the addition of works in the second period, the exhibition is expected to offer a deeper insight into Ueda's universe.
This exhibition, which is an unmissable opportunity for fans of FLCL and Ueda's other works, also stands out among the cultural events held in Tokyo during the summer months. Rumors are circulating that Ueda is working on a new manga project after the exhibition. It is useful to follow announcements made on the artist's official social media accounts.
