Hiroya Oku's Manga GIGANT Becomes a Film: K2 Pictures Announces Two Major Projects at Cannes

During the bustling days of the Cannes International Film Festival, film production fund K2 Pictures made a major surprise. The company announced that it will bring Hiroya Oku's popular manga GIGANT to the big screen as its first animated film project. At the same press conference, it was announced that Osamu Tezuka, one of the most important names in manga history, will have a dark musical film adaptation of his work "The Book of Human Insects". Both projects will be financed by K2 Pictures' newly established "K2P Film Fund I".
Hiroya Oku is a creator known especially for groundbreaking works like "Gantz" and "Inuyashiki". Published in Big Comic Superior magazine between 2016 and 2021, GIGANT centers on a giant female hero and her struggle to save the world. Oku's distinctive realistic drawing style and bold storytelling quickly earned the series a cult following. Having not received any anime adaptation so far, GIGANT holds a special meaning for fans. K2 Pictures' choice of this project as its first animated film reveals the studio's ambitious vision.
The other announcement belongs to the legendary name of the manga world, Osamu Tezuka. Published in 1963-1964, "The Book of Human Insects" is a dark psychological thriller centered around a woman burning with relentless ambition for success. This time, the director's chair will be occupied by Ken Ninomiya, known for his experimental films. Ninomiya describes this adaptation as a "dark musical," which seems to bring a fresh breath to Tezuka's ahead-of-its-time storytelling. Note that both projects are still in the early stages of production, but even the announcement at Cannes has caused a great stir on the international platform.
So what does this mean? K2 Pictures is a producer previously known for live-action films. Now it is expanding its portfolio by stepping into animation and musical genres. While the Japanese animation industry has drawn attention with big-budget films in recent years, this move by K2 Pictures shows that a new player is emerging in the sector. Especially their choice of a popular manga like GIGANT, which has not yet been adapted into anime, further increases fans' expectations. Release dates or cast have not been announced yet, but more details are expected in the coming months. We will all follow the fate of these two major adaptations and the impact of this new fund model on the industry.
