Kingdom Hearts IV Announced for Nintendo Switch 2; Classic Collection Also Coming

The highly anticipated fourth game of the Kingdom Hearts series, Kingdom Hearts IV, has been officially announced for Nintendo Switch 2. While Square Enix released a trailer exclusive to the new console, it also announced that the collections Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, containing remastered versions of the first three games, will be coming to Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The collection will be available on store shelves on October 8, 2026.
This news came as a big surprise for long-waiting Kingdom Hearts fans. The series, created by Tetsuya Nomura in 2002, is known for its complex story that brings together Disney and Final Fantasy characters. Kingdom Hearts IV was first announced at the series' 20th anniversary event in April 2022, and since then only a few short trailers and concept visuals had been shared. Now it is confirmed that the game will also come to the next-generation Nintendo console, the Switch 2. It should be noted that the Nintendo Switch 2 has not yet been officially announced (at the time of this writing), but industry sources and Square Enix's confirmation of this version are among the strongest indications that the console will be unveiled soon.
On the collection side, Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind (with the third game's DLC) will be presented in a single package. This means that games previously only available on PlayStation and Xbox ecosystems will appear on a Nintendo platform (Switch 2) and PC (likely Steam or Epic Games Store) for the first time. Square Enix confirmed that the collection includes 4K resolution, 60 FPS support, and all previous DLCs. Additionally, the series' mobile spin-off Kingdom Hearts Union χ Dark Road will be included in the collection as a film.
So why is this announcement so important? The Kingdom Hearts series has been available only on PlayStation and later Xbox for many years, while on Nintendo consoles it was represented by spin-offs (such as Chain of Memories, Dream Drop Distance). Being able to carry the entire main series thanks to the power of the Switch 2 is a major gain for Nintendo fans. At the same time, the simultaneous release of Kingdom Hearts IV on Switch 2 shows Square Enix's confidence in the new console. The series' total sales have exceeded 36 million, and Nomura's narrative full of endless mysteries keeps the fanbase always on edge.
In the coming period, more gameplay footage and story details are expected for Kingdom Hearts IV. Square Enix may showcase the game more extensively at a major event in the summer (likely Tokyo Game Show or its own showcase). Additionally, pre-orders for the collection are expected to start soon. If you are new to the series, this collection releasing on October 8 offers a complete entry package. The Kingdom Hearts universe continues to expand – and this time, the Switch 2 is with us.
