Kirio Fan Club Anime Is Coming: Get Ready for a Realistic High School Romance with Director Sou Toyama!

The long-awaited day for Kirio Fan Club fans is finally approaching! The anime adaptation of the manga series written by Ponchan Chikyū no Osakana (Earth's Fish Pon-chan), which quickly gained a cult following, will hit screens on April 2, 2026. Sou Toyama, who sits in the director's chair for the production prepared by the Satelight studio, shared exciting details about the project's vision in a recent interview. Toyama emphasizes that this production is not just a 'love story,' but a reflection of that pure, sometimes strange, and obsessive feeling of admiration during high school years in its most natural form.
The story revolves around two young girls, Aimi Miyoshi (voiced by Nene Hieda) and Nami Sometani (voiced by Shion Wakayama), who are platonically in love with their class's popular and mysterious boy, Ken Kirio (voiced by Gakuto Kajiwara). While girls are usually expected to be rivals and 'fight' in such stories, Kirio Fan Club completely breaks this cliché and tells the story of how the duo builds a deep friendship through this shared admiration. Director Toyama states that the absurd fantasies and funny plans the characters make while watching Kirio from afar will remind viewers of those 'embarrassing but sweet' moments from their own high school years.
The success of the series is actually no coincidence; the original manga managed to enter the top 10 for two consecutive years on one of Japan's most prestigious lists, 'Kono Manga ga Sugoi!' (This Manga Is Amazing!), ranking 6th in 2024 and 10th in 2025. Additionally, the live-action series released in 2025 also received great attention. Director Sou Toyama, who previously worked on important productions such as The Apothecary Diaries and March comes in like a lion, states that they want to maintain the 'realism' that is the foundation of this success in the animation style as well. Summarizing the spirit of the series, Toyama says, 'Our characters are not perfect; they are loud, sometimes strange, and overly serious about their love. We want to bring this energy to the screen.'
The music of the series is as ambitious as its story. The opening theme will be 'Fanclub' performed by Skirt and ODD Foot Works, while A-ko's song 'Harmony' will accompany us in the ending. The anime, with a screenplay by Aya Satsuki and character designs by Nami Hayashi, is a candidate to be one of the most notable 'slice of life' productions of the spring season. If you also miss those unrequited but excitement-filled feelings of high school years, this 'one-sided romantic comedy' might become one of your favorites starting from April 2nd!
