The Ninth Jedi actually came to life as a short film. The episode, which was included in the first season of the Star Wars: Visions anthology released on September 22, 2021, was written and directed by Kenji Kamiyama. Kamiyama is a name known for works such as Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Blade Runner: Black Lotus; he has returned to expand the story in this project. The short film managed to become a favorite among fans with its story of characters trying to restore the Jedi Order, tested within a dark conspiracy.
The new series is considered an important step in the Star Wars universe's investment in anime. The Visions anthology started with nine short films from seven different Japanese studios in its first season; in the second season, released on May 4, 2023, studios from different countries around the world joined.
