Mononoke Film Trilogy Producer Kōji Yamamoto Retires, Takahiro Sakurai's Secret Cameo Revealed

Mononoke film trilogy producer Kōji Yamamoto retired and publicly apologized after deciding to recast the Medicine Seller character originally voiced by Takahiro Sakurai for the third film. However, according to revealed information, Sakurai made a brief, unannounced cameo in his original role before the film's release without informing anyone.
According to an Anime News Network report on June 5, 2026, Yamamoto's retirement decision caused a major stir among fans. Mononoke is a cult anime series that aired in 2007, spun off from Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales. The series follows a strange Medicine Seller battling supernatural creatures and is known for its distinctive visual style. The first two films of the trilogy were released in Japan in 2025, and the third film was planned for fall 2026.
In his statement, Yamamoto said, "I deeply regret shaking the fans' trust by replacing Sakurai with another voice actor. The creative process behind this decision was entirely my fault. Therefore, I am stepping down from my producer role." Interestingly, despite hiring a new voice actor for the lead role in the third film, it was revealed that Sakurai secretly made a cameo in a specific scene with his original voice. The film crew had not announced this surprise return in any way.
This incident once again highlights the sensitivity surrounding voice actor recasting in the anime industry. Takahiro Sakurai had brought to life one of the most iconic characters of the Mononoke series, and fans had struggled to accept his departure from the role. Yamamoto's apology and retirement show how difficult it is for producers to balance creative decisions with fan expectations. For now, the third film's release date remains unchanged, but it is a matter of curiosity how these controversies will affect the film's box office performance.
