Rumiko Takahashi's New Legend MAO Becomes an Anime: Release Date and Platforms Announced!

The latest masterpiece from the living legend of the anime world, Rumiko Takahashi, MAO, is finally coming to screens. Premiering on April 4, 2026, the series will be available to viewers on Hulu in the United States and on Disney+ in the rest of the world, including Canada, Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand. Produced by Sunrise studio, this new adaptation is long-awaited news for Takahashi fans.
The story centers on Nanoka Kiba, a middle school student who survived a mysterious accident as a child. One day, Nanoka passes through a closed passage in the shopping mall where she had her accident and finds herself in Japan's Taisho era. There, she meets Mao, a mysterious onmyoji (spirit exorcist) who has lived for 900 years and is struggling with the curse of a cat demon. The duo joins forces to both solve the secrets of Nanoka's past and fight against supernatural events that threaten the world. Mao's 900-year quest and Nanoka's awakening powers deepen the series' dark fantasy atmosphere.
MAO follows in the footsteps of Takahashi's cult works such as Inuyasha, Ranma 1/2, and Urusei Yatsura. Serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine since 2019, the manga masterfully blends elements of dark fantasy, time travel, and romance. The series is directed by Teruo Sato, who has previously worked on Inuyasha projects, while the lead roles are voiced by famous voice actors Yuki Kaji (Mao) and Natsumi Kawaida (Nanoka Kiba). Given Sunrise studio's success with Inuyasha, this new project is expected to set the bar high in terms of visual and narrative quality.
One of the most exciting aspects of this adaptation is that it continues the tradition of all of Takahashi's major works being adapted into anime. The first season, which is expected to consist of 26 episodes and be released without breaks, will combine modern animation techniques with the classic Takahashi style. The theme of "the fateful partnership of two souls from different worlds," which is particularly familiar to Inuyasha fans, is taken to a much darker and more mysterious dimension with MAO. As the countdown begins for the big premiere on April 4, the fact that the global distribution rights for the series have been secured by Viz Media means that fans will have immediate access to the episodes.
