Rumiko Takahashi's New Work MAO Becomes an Anime: Hulu Announces Release Date

The latest great mystery from the pen of Rumiko Takahashi, known as the queen of the anime world, MAO, is finally being brought to the screen. Hulu has officially announced that the highly anticipated anime adaptation will begin airing on April 4, 2026. This news has created great excitement, especially for fans who grew up with cult productions like Inuyasha and Ranma 1/2. This production, in which Takahashi once again showcases her mastery of supernatural storytelling, appears to be a candidate for one of the most ambitious works of the spring season.
The story centers on Nanoka Kiba, a middle school student living in the present day who survived a mysterious accident as a child. One day, Nanoka suddenly finds herself in Taisho Era Japan, where monsters and spiritual entities roam. Here, she meets Mao, a mysterious "onmyoji" (spirit exorcist) who has been alive for 900 years and is trying to break a curse upon him. The duo's paths cross to shed light on both the secrets of Nanoka's past and the dark forces that Mao is pursuing. The series blends Takahashi's classic dark fantasy and romance elements with a modern mystery.
The names behind the production are just as remarkable as the story itself. The anime is produced by the legendary Sunrise (Bandai Namco Filmworks) studio, which was also responsible for the Inuyasha series. In the director's chair sits Teruo Sato, whom we know from Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon. Character designs are entrusted to Yoshihito Hishinuma, a veteran of Inuyasha. The voice cast includes star names such as Yuki Kaji (Eren Yeager from Attack on Titan), who will bring the character Mao to life, and Natsumi Kawaida, who will voice Nanoka.
This adaptation represents an important turning point in Rumiko Takahashi's career; with the anime adaptation of MAO, all of the author's main series serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine have now been adapted into anime. This period, dubbed the "Rumic Renaissance" among fans, reaches its peak with this brand-new story following the modern remakes of Urusei Yatsura and Ranma 1/2. The first season is expected to consist of 26 episodes and captivate viewers with the opening song "Heartloud," performed by the group Kis-My-Ft2.
