Comic Market 108: 260,000 Participants in Two Days, Notable Decline in Attendance
Comic Market (Comiket), recognized as the world's largest manga and anime event, opened its doors for the 108th time and hosted a total of 260,000 participants over two days. However, this figure reveals a decline of approximately 40,000 people compared to the previous event, Comiket 107. This decline is seen as a significant turning point in the event's post-pandemic recovery process.
Held at the Tokyo Big Sight exhibition complex in Tokyo's Odaiba area, the event brought together both professional publishers and thousands of doujinshi (independent comic) artists, as it does every year. This event, where young talents are discovered and which has become a favorite of major studios, remains the most important organization tracking the pulse of the industry. However, this year's attendance numbers have raised some questions regarding the industry's dynamics.
Looking at Comiket's history, the event began in 1975 with just 32 participants. Today, it has transformed into a massive organization hosting hundreds of thousands of people. Comiket 97, held in 2019, set a record with over 750,000 visitors. Due to the pandemic, some events in 2020 and 2021 were canceled or held online. Comiket 107 reaching 300,000 participants was seen as a sign of a return to normalcy. However, this year's figure of 260,000 indicates that fans' interest in events has not fully returned to previous levels.
Among the reasons for this decline in attendance are factors such as economic difficulties in Japan, increased travel costs, and especially the younger generation's shift toward digital platforms. Additionally, the event being limited to two days and the lack of new episodes of some popular series during this period may have also affected attendance. Nevertheless, Comiket continues to be a showcase followed by millions of fans worldwide, where new content is exhibited for the first time.
In the coming period, Comiket organizers are expected to develop new strategies to increase attendance. Topics such as expanding online participation options, providing conveniences for international visitors, and extending the event duration may come to the forefront. While this year's decline serves as a warning for the industry's future, it does not change the fact that Comiket remains the world's largest and most influential manga/anime gathering.
