Final Fantasy Resonance: A New HD-2D Visual Title Coming from Square Enix

Square Enix excited fans with a surprise announcement recently. The company officially announced Final Fantasy Resonance, a new fully offline title based on the story world of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, which reached millions of players on mobile devices. The game is being developed with the HD-2D graphic style that the studio made iconic with Octopath Traveler, aiming to revive the classic Final Fantasy atmosphere with a modern touch.
Details are currently limited about Final Fantasy Resonance, for which no release date or platform information has been shared yet. However, the HD-2D aesthetic, which Square Enix has proven with titles like Live A Live and Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, is expected to be adapted to the Brave Exvius universe, offering both a nostalgic experience for old fans and an introductory title for new players. Given the continued success of Brave Exvius since 2015 and its large character pool, it is highly likely that Resonance will be a story-driven, single-player adventure.
Under the same announcement, Square Enix also revealed that the Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster collection will be released for the Nintendo Switch 2 on July 23, 2026. Unlike the previous version on Switch, this version will come with faster loading times and potential visual improvements offered by the next-generation hardware. Particularly, the emotional story of Final Fantasy X and its landmark graphics of its time await rediscovery on the Switch 2's screen.
These two announcements are part of Square Enix's strategy to diversify the Final Fantasy brand by both adopting new technologies and bringing classic games to modern platforms. For Brave Exvius fans, Resonance offers a long-awaited "real Final Fantasy" experience, while the X/X-2 HD Remaster takes its place on the list for Switch 2 owners. New trailers and a release window for Final Fantasy Resonance are expected in the coming months.
