Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is Coming to Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S: Release Date and Demo News!

Square Enix has officially announced that the critically acclaimed Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will be released for Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S on June 3, 2026. Along with a new trailer released on April 28, a demo version is now available on both platforms, allowing players to experience this massive adventure in advance. This move is considered one of the most critical steps in the "aggressive multi-platform" strategy that Square Enix announced in recent years.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second installment in the trilogy that presents the story of the legendary 1997 original game with modern graphics and an expanded narrative. Developed under the leadership of director Naoki Hamaguchi and producer Yoshinori Kitase, the title follows the epic journey of Cloud Strife and his friends as they venture beyond the dystopian borders of Midgar to track down Sephiroth in the outside world. Initially released exclusively for PlayStation 5 in February 2024, the game received over 125 perfect scores from critics and won more than 40 "Game of the Year" awards, becoming a modern classic.
This expansion decision by Square Enix is part of the new business plan the company shared in 2024. Company president Takashi Kiryu had stated that to reach wider audiences and increase profitability, they would no longer be tied to a single console for AAA-quality titles and would bring their games to PC, Nintendo, and Xbox platforms. The Nintendo Switch 2 version, in particular, is highly anticipated by tech enthusiasts as it is expected to be one of the first major titles to showcase the hardware power of the next-generation handheld console. On the Xbox side, thanks to Xbox Play Anywhere support, players will be able to synchronize their progress between PC and console.
The demo, which is available for download now, covers the first two chapters of the game and allows players to play through the Nibelheim flashback sequence and the opening adventures in the town of Kalm. The best news is that progress saved in the demo can be transferred to the full version on June 3. Additionally, players who complete the demo will receive special bonuses such as the "Kupo Charm," which increases the chance of collecting items, and a survival set in the full game. While work continues on the yet-to-be-titled final chapter of the trilogy, these new platform releases seem set to bring the series' fan base to its peak before the finale.
