KAIST Develops ComiXR, the First XR Platform Bringing Webtoons to the Real World

According to Anime News Network's July 31, 2026 report, KAIST, one of South Korea's leading research universities, has developed ComiXR, the world's first extended reality (XR)-based webtoon platform. This innovative platform takes comics off screens and into the real world. With ComiXR, users can place 3D characters, speech bubbles, and sound effects within physical spaces.
XR, or Extended Reality, is known as an umbrella term covering augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR). ComiXR also uses a combination of these technologies to transform the webtoon reading experience from a passive activity. Users can project a scene anywhere in a room, share the same space with characters, and directly feel the story's atmosphere through sound effects. This adds a new dimension, both technologically and narratively, to the mobile-first webtoon culture.
Webtoons are a type of digital comic that originated in South Korea and became suitable for smartphones with a vertical scrolling format. Thanks to the global success of platforms like Naver Webtoon and KakaoPage, webtoons now reach millions of readers worldwide. The addition of ComiXR to this ecosystem offers content creators a new expressive space and raises the possibility of a new revenue model for publishers, characterized by interactive experiences. This platform, which looks more like a commercial product than an academic research project, is considered one of the successful examples of university-industry collaboration.
Daejeon-based KAIST is an institution that has previously made a name for itself with robotics, artificial intelligence, and advanced imaging technologies. The university's appearance on the agenda with a content technology this time shows that the entertainment industry has also entered the priorities of research laboratories. It is not yet clear when ComiXR will be available, which XR glasses it will be compatible with, and whether it will work integrated with webtoon platforms. However, after the announcement, attention has turned to publishers and content creators who will be the first to adopt this technology.
The real magic of ComiXR is that fans will be able to not only read a story but also walk inside it. This kind of narration could further blur the lines between webtoons, games, animation, and live-action productions in the future. In the coming period, KAIST's steps to license or commercialize the project could be one of the most important developments determining the course of the webtoon ecosystem.
