Nintendo Celebrates Animal Crossing’s 25th Anniversary: Don’t Forget to Check Your Mailbox on Your Island!

One of the most peaceful and beloved series in the gaming world, Animal Crossing, is celebrating its 25th anniversary today! To honor this massive milestone, Nintendo has released a surprise update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons players. Players who download the Ver. 3.0.2 update, which became available as of April 14, 2026, will find a special Leaf Statue in their island mailboxes—an item that represents the series' iconic logo and glows at night. The letter accompanying the gift pays homage to the old days with Nintendo 64 logo stamps and a K.K. Slider design.
The series' journey began on April 14, 2001, in Japan with Dōbutsu no Mori (Animal Forest) for the Nintendo 64. The series creator, Katsuya Eguchi, developed this concept based on the feelings of loneliness he experienced when he first moved to Kyoto. This "social simulation" genre, which he laid the foundations for alongside Hisashi Nogami, gave players the chance to live in a real-time world filled with anthropomorphic animal neighbors. Initially seen as a success unique to Japan, the production expanded to the world with its GameCube release and quickly turned into a global phenomenon.
In particular, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, released in 2020, became a digital sanctuary for millions of people during the pandemic, propelling the series to its peak. According to data from the end of 2025, the game has sold over 49 million copies, breaking Pokémon Red/Green's decades-old record by surpassing the 8 million physical sales mark in Japan alone. Reaching a total sales figure of over 84 million, the series solidified its place in the modern gaming world by receiving a special version for the Nintendo Switch 2 and a massive 3.0 update last January.
Nintendo did not limit the celebrations to in-game gifts. The company offered fans a nostalgia-filled experience by adding over 150 music tracks from the first generation of games to the Nintendo Music app. This adventure, which started in a small forest 25 years ago, has now transformed into a massive community and a cultural legacy. If you haven't visited your island in a while, now is a great time to claim this special Leaf Statue and read Nintendo's thank-you letter!
