Square Enix Opens Its First Permanent Cafe in the US in Los Angeles: A New Era in Little Tokyo

Video game industry giant Square Enix has taken a massive step that has thrilled fans by announcing the opening of its first permanent cafe in the United States. Scheduled to open its doors in the spring of 2026, this new venue will be located in the heart of Los Angeles' Little Tokyo district at 316 E 1st St. This iconic location, which previously housed Mitsuru Sushi & Grill, will now serve as a gateway to the worlds of legendary series such as Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts.
This move is not limited to the US; Square Enix has also confirmed that it will open a new flagship cafe in the Shinjuku district of Tokyo, inside the three-story PASELABO TOWER building. The company being named publisher of the year by Metacritic in 2025 and the Final Fantasy series selling over 209 million units worldwide prove just how high the demand is for these types of physical experience spaces. This new venue in Los Angeles will not just be a restaurant, but will also incorporate a massive store concept selling exclusive merchandise.
So, what awaits us at this cafe? The Square Enix Cafe concept, as we know from its counterparts in Japan, operates on a "rotating theme" system. This means the cafe's decor, menu, and merchandise change every few months, being redesigned based on NieR, Dragon Quest, or the latest Final Fantasy games. Fans will be able to eat Slime-shaped desserts or sip on special Cloud Strife-themed drinks while accessing limited-edition figures and accessories they won't find anywhere else.
Although short-term "pop-up" cafes have been opened in Los Angeles before, the fact that this initiative is permanent marks a major turning point for the fan base in the West. Industry analysts state that this step shows Square Enix's determination to become not just a game publisher, but a lifestyle brand as well. If you find yourself in Los Angeles in the spring of 2026, you had better start planning your reservations to visit this venue, which will be operated by J-Pop Culture Cafe Inc.; given the popularity of these cafes in Japan, finding a spot might be quite difficult!
