Nintendo Legend Takashi Tezuka Retires: The End of an Era

One of the most influential figures in the gaming world, Takashi Tezuka, is preparing to retire from Nintendo, which he joined in 1984, on June 26, 2026. Having left his mark on many masterpieces that shaped video game history throughout his nearly 42-year career, Tezuka is particularly known for his critical role in the creation process of the Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda series. This departure, announced in Nintendo's latest financial report, is being described as the end of an era in the gaming industry.
Tezuka began his career in close collaboration with Shigeru Miyamoto and served as a director and designer on the original Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda games, which laid the foundations of modern game design. Tezuka's creative touch manifested not only in game mechanics but also in the design of iconic characters like Yoshi. He became one of the names who built Nintendo's golden age by directing cult productions such as Super Mario World and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.
In the later years of his career, focusing more on producer and executive roles, Tezuka contributed significantly to the development of series such as Animal Crossing, Pikmin, and Super Mario Maker. Most recently, the legendary figure, who served as a producer on the highly acclaimed 2023 game Super Mario Bros. Wonder, held the position of Executive Officer within Nintendo EPD. Tezuka's game design philosophy was built on a passion for "making games that everyone can enjoy," and this vision became the key to Nintendo's global success.
