Final Trailer Released for The Exit 8 Live-Action Film: In Theaters This Friday!

The Exit 8 (8番出口), which quickly became an internet phenomenon and one of the most popular representatives of the "liminal space" horror genre, is heading to the big screen. With only days left until the film's North American premiere, distributor Neon has released the final trailer with English subtitles. Set to hit theaters on Friday, April 10, 2026, the film aims to translate the game's tense and claustrophobic atmosphere into a cinematic language.
Released at the end of 2023 by solo developer KOTAKE CREATE, the original game trapped players in an endless Japanese subway tunnel. The players' only task was to spot small environmental changes (anomalies) and proceed in the correct direction to reach Exit 8. With its simple yet effective mechanics, the title reached millions of views on platforms like Twitch and YouTube, creating a massive buzz in the indie gaming world. The film adaptation is expected to center on this "spot the difference" tension, offering a psychological thriller that keeps the audience constantly on edge.
The film is directed by Genki Kawamura, who has produced massive hits like Your Name and Monster, and won awards for his directorial work on A Hundred Flowers. The lead roles are played by beloved Japanese stars Kazunari Ninomiya (The Lost Man) and Nana Komatsu. After having its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival's Midnight Screenings section, where it received an 8-minute standing ovation, the film achieved great commercial success, grossing approximately $39 million during its theatrical run in Japan.
One of the most exciting details for fans was how the game's iconic The Walking Man character would be handled in the film. As part of the promotional campaign, actor Yamato Kochi, who portrays the character, met with fans in the New York subway on April 8 while in character. Director Kawamura states that while they maintained the game's first-person perspective, they deepened the story to create an experience where viewers will question their own reality. If you enjoy getting lost in subway corridors and paying attention to details, we recommend you don't miss this nightmare starting this weekend.
