WEBTOON Restructures Global Leadership: Aiming for Growth with New CBO and Strategic Appointments

WEBTOON Entertainment, the world's most popular digital comic platform, has announced a major restructuring of its management team to increase its influence in global markets and maximize operational speed. According to the official statement released on April 13, 2026, the company has created the Chief Business Officer (CBO) position for the first time in its history and appointed experienced executive Leah Goeun Yeon to this role. This move is seen as the most significant part of the platform's transition from a regional management model to a centralized global leadership structure.
The new CBO Leah Goeun Yeon previously served as a senior executive in charge of growth and marketing at South Korea's giant food delivery app Woowa Brothers (Baedal Minjok). Drawing attention with her experience at giants such as McKinsey, Google, and Samsung Electronics, Yeon will be responsible for all global webtoon operations outside of Japan, content strategies, and creative management within WEBTOON. Company CEO Yongsoo Kim summarizes the purpose of this change as "becoming a faster-moving and more cohesive organization to reach our global potential."
The restructuring was not limited to the CBO appointment; Yuki Chae was promoted to Chief Product Officer (CPO) to manage the global product roadmap, while Teo Taeyeong Jang was appointed head of the artificial intelligence (AI) unit, and Sean Shinhyung Kim was named head of intellectual property (IP) business. Meanwhile, to increase operational efficiency, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) positions were completely eliminated. Current CFO David J. Lee will assume the presidency of the Wattpad platform in addition to his current duties.
This major shift is directly linked to the financial goals of the company, which went public on the Nasdaq stock exchange (WBTN) in 2024. WEBTOON, which closed 2025 with $1.4 billion in revenue but saw its net loss rise to $373.4 million, aims to reach wider audiences, especially through strategic partnerships with Disney and Warner Bros. Animation. With approximately 160 million monthly active users, the platform plans to bring anime, series, and film adaptations of beloved series to life much faster with this new leadership structure.
For us readers, this could mean better global marketing for our favorite series and more frequent appearances of new successes like Solo Leveling or Tower of God. The company's emphasis on artificial intelligence and IP management seems set to increase the speed at which content is translated into different languages while ensuring creators receive more support in the global market. We will see together how this "aggressive growth" mode of WEBTOON will shape the competition in the digital comic world.
