Asha of the Border — Prologue

The opening chapter of Asha of the Border wastes no time establishing its fairy-tale gravity, yet it does so through the softest possible lens: a sleepless child, a patient father, and a bedtime story that will haunt every page to come. Little Renée cannot sleep, so she curls into her father's warmth, and he spins the legend of the Blue Goblin—a man-eating monster said to stalk the desolate mountain where three nations meet, wielding a strange sword in massive hands, its spear-like fangs ready for prey. It is a chilling image, but what makes the scene sing is Renée's reaction. Instead of trembling, she asks how she might meet the creature. That single line of curiosity does more character work than a dozen exposition panels could—she is fearless, inquisitive, and perhaps already drawn to the very things she should fear. Her father's gentle correction, urging her to run if she ever encounters it, plants the story's central tension between danger and wonder. The emotional core lands in the final beats: a whispered goodnight, a promise of eternal love. Readers who know what awaits this family will feel that tenderness like a blade. The art in this prologue leans into warm, dimly lit intimacy—soft shadows, close framing on the father-daughter pair, and a visual contrast between the cozy bedchamber and the imagined vastness of the borderlands. The Blue Goblin itself is rendered with just enough detail to sear into memory without overwhelming the page, a silhouette of dread against a moonlit mountain. This is a quiet chapter, but it is not a passive one. It seeds the border as a place of fear and myth, introduces Renée's defining trait of running toward the unknown, and frames the entire narrative as an inheritance of stories—some told to comfort, others destined to come true.
