Asha of the Border — Chapter 2

Asha of the Border Chapter 2 opens with Eden Dean caught between two problems, a gagged captive being interrogated about a lost whistle and a scolding over the foreign girl he rescued. The interrogation establishes the whistle by size as something small and important, while the older man accuses Eden of meddling instead of sticking to hunting and demands he put the outsider back where she belongs. Eden pushes back by asking where that would even be, then rejects the idea that he intends to take her to the village, leaving her alone because he doubts she will wake soon and declares he is done helping out of pity. Asha of the Border Chapter 2 then shifts to the palace, where officials panic upon learning the princess is gone. To avoid scandal from the attack, they agree to pretend she has left for a retreat to the borderlands while conducting a secret search there. The order is urgent because she is described as the only heir despite being called a fool, while another voice privately orders the princess found before the royal guards, dead or alive, after condemning the failure to take care of one little girl. The contrast shows a public cover story and a harsher hidden pursuit unfolding at the same time. When the girl wakes, she remembers the village lies further on from the mountain but fears going there because an assassin may be waiting, possibly sent by her grandmother. She decides she cannot face that threat alone and calls out for help, even mistaking her rescuer for a goblin. Eden returns, annoyed that she wandered the mountain instead of following his map and dropped her money, then grows alarmed when she searches near the cliff. She explains she was looking for the whistle described as about this wide and this long, and her claim that she found it ends the chapter on a fragile moment of trust. Asha of the Border Chapter 2 therefore centers on abandonment and return, as Eden tries to walk away but is pulled back when her choice to help him puts her in danger.
