Episode 69
DID YOU SAY THAT THE FIGHTER JETS DIDN'T GET DETECTED BY OUR RADAR?
YES SIR, IT LOOKS LIKE THEY SCATTERED ALUMNINUM FRAGMENTS TO AVOID DETECTION!
IT CAN'T BE HELPED.
PREPARE ALL THE ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUNS THAT ARE IN DEVELOPMENT AND SHOOT THEM DOWN!
YES, SIR!
I HAVE TO...
HURRY...
SIR!!
COMMANDER, PLEASE BE CAREFUL--
UGH...
WHAT...
...IS THIS WAR EVEN FOR?
WHAT AM I EVEN FIGHTING FOR...?
SIR, ARE YOU ALRIGHT?
WE NEED TO HURRY, SIR!
AH...
I'M FINE. LET'S HURRY.
UGH...
HAH...
...IT'S A HELL ON EARTH...
I'M SORRY, SIR!
WE HAVE A FLAT TIRE...
CAN WE FIX IT?
WE DON'T HAVE A SPARE, SO IT'S IMPOSSIBLE RIGHT NOW, SIR!
GET YOUR RIFLE AND PREPARE TO RUN.
WE'LL LEAVE THE CAR BEHIND.
THE BAG I'VE BEEN CARRYING...
...CONTAINS HER PORTRAIT, AND THE SCARF SHE GAVE ME...
ANNETTE.
ALL MY PATHS LEAD ME TO YOU.
I DON'T MIND NOT HAVING ANYTHING.
AFTER ALL, THE PATH I WALKED WAS IN RUINS,
AND EVERYTHING I HAD BECAME BROKEN.
MY FUTURE IS UNCERTAIN...
...SO I ENTRUSTED MY LAST PIECE TO YOU.
AND NOW, WHAT MATTERS TO ME THE MOST...
...IS EVERYTHING THAT IS HEADING YOUR WAY.
I WANT YOU TO LIVE IN A BETTER WORLD.
I WANT YOU TO WALK TOWARD A BRIGHTER FUTURE.
AND AT THE END OF THAT ROAD...
...I WANT YOU TO SMILE AGAIN...
...JUST LIKE YOU DID AT THE SHIMMERING GLENFORD SEA.
BUT IF I'M ALLOWED ONE LAST DESIRE...
My Dear Heiner.
I WISH TO FACE THE END OF THIS ROAD WITH YOUR LETTER CLOSE TO MY HEART.
i've been staying at seinshire for a while.
i'm resting a lot, and i occasionally help out at the refugee camp. (only for a short time, really!)
how about you? are you doing well?
all the newspapers are reporting our victory at cheshire field.
but i'm still not at ease. i only hope the articles are true.
heiner, after we parted, i've been thinking a lot.
about our past and the future we'll walk together.
i believe your words...
...when you said that our past wasn't a lie, when you said you loved me,
and that i was important to you.
did you know, heiner?
i've always admired the romantic idea of giving up everything for love, yet i never thought it would actually happen.
to throw everything away and choose love... it sounds romantic, but it's impossible, isn't it?
in the past, i had too many things that i cherished.
but after meeting you, surprisingly, sometimes i found myself thinking...
...that if i could be with you, i wouldn't regret giving up everything.
but heiner, after much deliberation, the conclusion i came to is...
we cannot continue together.
there are many reasons for this conclusion.
WHAT IS HE SAYING?
AH, IS IT PERHAPS...
MY LEFT EAR...
we have our past and future, the political and social issues,
and the fundamental problems that lie between you and me.
we can't just live on as if nothing ever happened.
WE'D TRY TO FORGET THE PAST IN ORDER TO BE TOGETHER, AND IN DOING SO, WE'D ONLY END UP REOPENING EACH OTHER'S WOUNDS.
and despite all that, heiner... if i'm allowed one final wish...
it's that i want to see your face one more time.
i want to hear how you're doing.
even if we can't be together, i want us to watch over and encourage each other...
...and live on like that, in this world.
thank you for loving someone like me.
if i have any happiness or luck left, i'll give it all to you.
please, win this war.
make the world a better place.
i'll be waiting for you, at this world that you'll be building.
forever and always.
...OH MY.
Sincerely,
Annette Rozenberg.
SUNSET CLIFF...
WE'LL GO TO THE BEACH NEXT SPRING, WHEN THE WEATHER WARMS UP A BIT.
GLENFORD IS NICE, BUT IF YOU GO A BIT FURTHER SOUTH...
...THERE ARE BEAUTIFUL SUNSETS AT SUNSET CLIFF.
THIS IS THE SOUTHERN CITY WHERE I'LL BEGIN MY NEW LIFE. SANTAMOLI.
JUST LIKE YOU SAID, THE SUNSETS HERE ARE TRULY...
...SO BEAUTIFUL, HEINER.
In the midst of battle, the commander orders anti-aircraft guns to be readied for warplanes evading radar while trying to advance on the front line. When his car's tire bursts, he is left on foot; he thinks of carrying Annette's portrait and scarf with him. Then a letter from Annette Rozenberg written from Seinshire is read: she says they cannot continue together, but thanks him for loving her and wishes for him to win the war. The chapter ends with a sunset view in Santamoli in the south.
