Chapter 5 is where the reality check hits hard for Team 7, and it is exactly what this newly formed squad needed. After all the bickering and posturing in the previous chapter, Kakashi Hatake finally puts Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura to the test with his infamous bell exercise, and the results are predictably chaotic. The premise is simple: take two bells from Kakashi before noon or fail and be sent back to the Academy. What seems like a straightforward contest of skill quickly reveals itself to be something far more complex.
This chapter is brilliant for character development because it strips each genin down to their core flaws. Naruto charges in headfirst with zero strategy, relying purely on brute force and his new Shadow Clone Jutsu, which perfectly captures his impulsive need to prove himself. Sasuke, in contrast, is cool and calculating, trying to take Kakashi alone and refusing to see his teammates as anything but dead weight. Sakura, meanwhile, is so fixated on impressing Sasuke that she completely loses sight of the actual objective. Kishimoto does an excellent job showing that while they are all talented individually, they are a terrible team, and Kakashi sees right through it.
The plot progression here is subtle but crucial. This is not just about passing a test; it is the first true lesson of what it means to be a shinobi. Kakashi’s laid-back yet menacing demeanor, punctuated by his casual use of the Sharingan and his infamous thousand years of death technique, establishes him as an elite jonin who is leagues above his students. The tension builds as each attempt fails, driving home the emotional theme that ninja work is not about solo glory but about trust and cooperation.
Artistically, Kishimoto shines in the action choreography and comedic timing. The exaggerated expressions, especially Naruto’s frustration and Sakura’s internal monologues, add a layer of comedy that balances the underlying seriousness of the test. The paneling during the short skirmishes keeps the pace fast and dynamic, making Kakashi feel untouchable while highlighting just how far Team 7 still has to go.
