Slam Dunk — Chapter 4

Slam Dunk Chapter 4 is where Takehiko Inoue truly leans into the beautiful disaster that is Hanamichi Sakuragi, and it's impossible not to love him for it. After impulsively joining the Shohoku basketball team to impress Haruko Akagi, Sakuragi's delusional self-confidence hits a wall of reality. He declares himself a genius, yet he doesn't know the most basic rules of the game, and that gap between his massive ego and his complete lack of knowledge is where all the comedy lives. This chapter thrives on that second-hand embarrassment, watching Sakuragi strut onto the court with total conviction while everyone else can see he has no idea what he's doing. Plot-wise, this installment is crucial for establishing the central dynamic that will define the early story. Sakuragi's rivalry with Kaede Rukawa is already simmering, but his collision course with Captain Takenori Akagi takes center stage here. His attempt to make an impression goes spectacularly wrong when he disrespects Akagi, Haruko's older brother, in the most juvenile way possible. It's a classic Sakuragi move, impulsive, cocky, and completely lacking self-awareness, which earns him the captain's immediate fury. Yet, in the middle of this comedic humiliation, Inoue slips in a flash of genuine brilliance. Sakuragi's raw athleticism explodes when he throws down an incredible dunk right over Akagi, a moment that shocks everyone in the gym and hints that beneath the foolishness lies serious, untapped potential. Emotionally, the chapter perfectly captures the painful sincerity of a teenage crush. Everything Sakuragi does, no matter how stupid, is driven by his desperate desire to look cool in front of Haruko. That vulnerability makes his buffoonery endearing rather than annoying. Inoue's art does so much heavy lifting here, his expressive character acting sells every beat, from Sakuragi's smug, idiotic grin to Akagi's vein-popping rage and Haruko's bewildered reactions. The comedic timing in the panel work is flawless, stretching out the awkward pauses for maximum cringe before delivering the explosive athletic payoff of the dunk with incredible impact and detail.
