In this chapter, the narrator walking with her master through a wooded hunting ground likens the scent of the earth and water to the spring in her homeland. As she says she lived with spirits at the spring and never knew her parents, her inner voice admits this is a lie. Her injury, the changes in the palace, and her weight loss are questioned; her master shows possessive and angry affection. Diana vows not to fall for him and to protect herself.
