Chapter Analysis Arpeggio on the Surface of the Sea — Chapter 13
Chapter 13 feels like the moment where the surface tension finally breaks for Su-yeon, and it is messy in the best way. After spending so many chapters keeping everyone at arm's length, we see him forced to sit with the discomfort Hae-su causes him, not the fluttery kind, but the kind that comes from being truly seen. His performance anxiety has always been framed as a music problem, but this chapter makes it clear it is an intimacy problem. He can play the notes perfectly when no one is listening, yet the second someone cares, he freezes. Watching him try to navigate a normal college group project while carrying that weight makes his coldness feel less like arrogance and more like self-protection. Hae-su, on the other hand, continues to be the emotional anchor of this story without turning into a simple sunshine savior. What makes his persistence work here is that he actually listens. He does not just push for another night together or demand acknowledgment of their past. He notices when Su-yeon shuts down, when his hands tense, when his breathing changes, and he gives him space before gently reaching back out. That balance between playful swimmer energy and quiet emotional intelligence is why fans have latched onto him so hard. He remembers the warmth of that forgotten night, but he wants the sober, daylight version of Su-yeon even more. Plot-wise, this installment pushes their forced proximity from awkward classmates to something undeniably personal. A small shared moment, a lingering look after practice, a conversation that goes a beat too long, all signal that Su-yeon can no longer pretend Hae-su is just another casual encounter. The emotional theme is clearly about surfacing for air. If the deep sea was silence and escape, Hae-su is the pull toward the light, painful but necessary. Visually, Wabec absolutely shines. The contrast between the fluid, sunlit water scenes and the tight, claustrophobic close-ups during Su-yeon's piano moments says everything without dialogue. You can almost hear the arpeggio stuttering as his confidence wavers.
