The Summer Hikaru Died

Yoshiki and Hikaru have been inseparable since childhood, growing up together in a secluded village where everyone knows each other. However, their lives change forever when Hikaru goes missing in the mountains for a week. When he finally returns, he seems identical to the boy he was before, but Yoshiki quickly realizes that the entity inhabiting his friend's body is something ancient and alien. Despite the horrifying confirmation that the real Hikaru is gone, Yoshiki’s overwhelming grief leads him to make a dangerous choice: he will continue his friendship with the creature as if nothing has changed.

As the two try to maintain a facade of normalcy at school, the entity's presence begins to trigger strange and unsettling occurrences throughout the village. The Summer Hikaru Died masterfully blends visceral body horror with a poignant exploration of loss and the 'uncanny valley.' The series stands out for its oppressive, sun-drenched atmosphere and its ability to make the mundane feel deeply threatening. Readers will find themselves drawn into a complex web of mystery as they wonder what the entity truly wants and how long Yoshiki can survive living in the shadow of a ghost.
