2026 Doraemon Film Remains at the Top of the Japanese Box Office: The Ogre's Bride Slips to Fourth Place

The Doraemon wind continues to blow at the Japanese box office! The 45th film in the series, Doraemon: Nobita and the New Castle of the Undersea Devil (Nobita no Kaitei Kigan-jo), has not relinquished its number one spot in its sixth week of release. According to data for the weekend of April 3-5, 2026, the film sold 213,000 tickets this weekend alone, generating 276 million yen in revenue. Reaching a total gross of 3.7 billion yen (approximately 23 million dollars) in 38 days, the production continues to be the number one choice for families during the spring holiday period in Japan.
On the other hand, the highly anticipated live-action adaptation The Ogre's Bride (Oni no Hanayome), which entered the chart at third place last week, slipped to fourth place in its second week. Starring Ren Nagase from the group King & Prince (as Reiya Kiryūin) and Ai Yoshikawa (as Yuzu Shinonome), the film brings a supernatural romance story to the big screen. Adapted from Kureha's popular light novel series, the production has created great excitement among fans ahead of the anime series set to begin in July 2026, despite a slight decline at the box office.
Activity continues in the rest of the chart. Chimney Town: Frozen in Time (Eiga Entotsumachi no Poupelle: Yakusoku no Tokeidai), produced by Studio 4°C and serving as a sequel to the 2020 film, fell to seventh place in its second week. Similarly, the live-action sequel Golden Kamuy: Attack on Abashiri Prison Arc, starring Kento Yamazaki, dropped to eighth place, while Assassination Classroom The Movie: Our Time, celebrating the series' 10th anniversary, fell to ninth. The surprise of the week was director Shingo Yamashita's original anime Cosmic Princess Kaguya!, which climbed five spots to land in fifth place.
This picture once again proves the unshakable power of established series and family-friendly content at the Japanese box office. Especially with the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle I film reaching the end of its theatrical run after crossing the 40 billion yen mark, it is clear that classics like Doraemon are filling the void. How the list will take shape with the release of new anime projects in the coming weeks remains a subject of curiosity.
