All Pokémon Center Events in Japan Cancelled: Security Alert Following Tragic Attack at Mega Tokyo

The Pokémon community in Japan is in mourning following a shocking incident that occurred recently. The Pokémon Company has announced that, following the tragic stabbing attack at the Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo branch on March 26, 2026, it has cancelled nearly all events scheduled for the month of April at all stores across Japan. While the company officially stated that this decision was made due to "unforeseen circumstances," it is understood that the primary goal is to ensure staff safety and protect the mental well-being of employees.
The incident took place at the flagship store located in the famous Sunshine City shopping mall in the Ikebukuro district of Tokyo. 21-year-old part-time employee Moe Harukawa was attacked around 7:15 PM by 26-year-old Taiki Hirokawa, who was identified as her ex-boyfriend. According to eyewitness accounts, the attacker entered the store, targeted Harukawa, and then harmed himself; unfortunately, both individuals passed away after being taken to the hospital. Investigations revealed that the attacker had previously been arrested for stalking but was later released.
Following this horrific event, social activities at all Pokémon Center locations in Japan, such as "Pokémon Greetings" mascot meet-and-greets, card game classes, and giveaways, have been suspended. Only official tournaments like the Pokémon Card Game City League and Pokémon GO qualifiers will continue, but these events will be held without spectators, without broadcasts, and under extremely strict security measures. The Mega Tokyo branch and the Pikachu Sweets cafe inside remain closed indefinitely.
Pokémon Center stores were seen not just as shops in Japan, but as safe havens where families and fans of all ages could come together. The fact that more than 100 customers, including children, witnessed this violence in the store at the time of the incident has sent a massive shockwave through the country. The Pokémon Company stated in its announcement, "The physical and mental health of our staff is more important to us than anything else," and has not yet provided information regarding the store's reopening date. Fans are sharing messages of condolence for the young employee who lost her life on social media, while the community argues that security measures must be increased in such venues.
