Fool Night Manga Gets Anime Adaptation on Netflix via Sunrise and Shaft Partnership

Blending science fiction and dark fantasy genres, the Fool Night manga is set to appear before its fans with a major anime adaptation. According to Anime News Network, Kasumi Yasuda's work will be adapted into a television anime co-produced by the legendary studios Sunrise (Gundam series, Code Geass) and Shaft (Madoka Magica, Monogatari series). The series will premiere simultaneously worldwide on Netflix within this year.
Along with the project, the first trailer, visuals, and voice cast have been revealed. It is stated that Mamoru Hatakeyama, known for his work on Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, is in the director's chair. The scriptwriting is handled by Yoshiki Sakurai (Akudama Drive). The music is being prepared by Yuki Kajiura (Demon Slayer, Sword Art Online) and Go Shiina (Demon Slayer) — let us recall that this team previously worked together on Demon Slayer: Mugen Train.
The story of the series is set in a future where the world has been shrouded in permanent night and the sun has disappeared. Humans have begun transforming into plant-like organisms capable of photosynthesis. The main character Yoshino pursues a flower that could stop this transformation process. The manga has been serialized in Young Jump magazine since 2019 and has reached a total of 10 volumes so far. The work draws attention with its dystopian atmosphere, themes of bodily transformation, and philosophical depth, particularly appealing to readers who enjoy body horror.
The collaboration of two major studios like Sunrise and Shaft is a rare occurrence in the industry. While Sunrise is commonly associated with mecha and epic science fiction, Shaft's distinctive visual style (head tilts, asymmetric framing, abstract backgrounds) raises curiosity about how it will adapt to the melancholic and tense world of Fool Night. Thanks to Netflix's global distribution, the series is expected to reach a wide audience beyond manga readers. Although a specific release date has not been announced, preparations are reportedly underway for late 2024 or early 2025.
This co-production signals both Sunrise's revitalized anime productions and Shaft's venture into a more mainstream project. With its visual novel-like story and disturbingly beautiful character designs, Fool Night is poised to be an unmissable production for fans of works like Made in Abyss or The Promised Neverland. More information on new trailers and a detailed release schedule is expected in the coming months.
