Legendary Anime "Manga Nippon Mukashibanashi" Comes to the Stage: Starring Norika Fujiwara!

One of Japan's most deeply rooted and beloved productions, Manga Nippon Mukashibanashi, is preparing to take fans on a nostalgic journey by moving to the theater stage this summer. This special production, which will be performed at the CBGK Shibugeki!! hall in Tokyo between August 5-9, 2026, stands out as part of the series' 50th-anniversary celebrations. Prepared in a "musical play" (ongaku-geki) format, the show will combine the most impressive folk tales selected from a massive archive of over 1400 episodes with live performances.
The cast of the play consists of quite ambitious names. While one of Japan's most well-known actresses, Norika Fujiwara, takes the lead role, she will be accompanied by the young star Nonoka Murakata, known by her nickname "Nono-chan." The script, direction, and music of the production have been entrusted to Takuma Suehara, who is known for his imaginative staging. In her statement, Fujiwara expressed that this project is very meaningful to her, stating, "It is a great honor to be a part of this work that has been etched in my heart since my childhood, and to pass on Japanese values to future generations."
Aired between 1975 and 1994, Manga Nippon Mukashibanashi became a cultural phenomenon by presenting Japanese folk literature and local legends in anime form. The series, which was etched into memories with the voice acting of legendary names like Etsuko Ichihara and Shinpei Ozawa, contained deep moral lessons and emotional stories that appealed not only to children but to viewers of all ages. It has been announced that this tradition will be continued in the stage adaptation, and a wide range of content will be presented, from emotional human stories to funny anecdotes and even hair-raising ghost stories (kaidan).
This new theater project shows that the world of anime is not just about new productions, but also how classics can be kept alive with modern interpretations. While the cast is expected to be further enriched with auditions to be held specifically for child actors, the producers emphasize that this show will be an experience that will "bring three generations together." This production, which will carry the warm and sincere atmosphere of the classic anime to the stage, promises an unforgettable summer event for both old fans and children who will be meeting Japanese folklore for the first time.
