The Finale of the Mononoke Film Trilogy Approaches: New Trailer and Visual Released for Hebigami

The moment Mononoke fans have been waiting for is approaching. A new key visual and the second trailer for Gekijōban Mononoke: Daisanshō - Hebigami (Mononoke Movie: Third Chapter - Serpent God), the final installment of the series' film trilogy, have been officially released. In this new teaser, the series' iconic character, the Medicine Seller (Kusuriuri), draws attention with his unconventional, white-dominated design. The production team announced that the film will hit theaters in Japan on May 29, 2026, starting the countdown for the trilogy's epic finale.
This final chapter of the trilogy takes place in the Ooku, the women's quarters of Edo Castle. The story follows the dark conspiracies that erupt in the palace following the tragic death of the Emperor's consort, Sachiko, and the struggle against the Serpent God (Hebigami), the embodiment of centuries of accumulated hatred. To destroy this terrifying entity, the Medicine Seller must, as always, uncover its Katachi (Form), Makoto (Truth), and Kotowari (Reason). The trailer promises a visual feast for viewers by combining the series' signature ukiyo-e style visuals with modern animation techniques.
The original Mononoke anime, released in 2007, quickly became a cult classic with its unique art style and psychological horror elements. Directed by Kenji Nakamura, the series originally began as a spin-off of the Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales anthology. This film trilogy, which arrived after years of silence, was brought to life as part of the series' 15th-anniversary celebrations. Following the first film, Karakasa, and the second film, Hinezumi, Hebigami will complete the cinematic journey of this mysterious universe.
On the production side, prominent names are involved. The film, produced by studio EOTA, features a score by Taku Iwasaki, while the voice cast includes giants such as Hiroshi Kamiya (Medicine Seller), Atsumi Tanezaki (Sachiko), and Miyuki Sawashiro. In particular, the performance of Hiroshi Kamiya, who took over the lead role following Takahiro Sakurai, is being followed with great interest by fans. This final film is creating great excitement in the community, not only as the end of a story but also as a production expected to offer deeper clues into the mysterious nature of the Medicine Seller.
