Good News for Natsume Yuujinchou and Hotarubi no Mori e Fans: Special Bus Tours Begin in Kumamoto!

Kumamoto Prefecture, home to two of the most peaceful and emotional stories in the anime world, invites its fans on an unforgettable journey this summer. Kyushu Sanko Group has announced a comprehensive bus tour project covering the real-life locations featured in the Natsume Yuujinchou (Natsume's Book of Friends) and Hotarubi no Mori e series, written by the famous mangaka Yuki Midorikawa. This regional contribution project, titled "Natsume Yujincho in Kumamoto 2026 – Hitoyoshi/Kuma", will begin in July 2026 and open its doors to visitors who want to experience the atmosphere of the series firsthand.
This special tour focuses specifically on the Hitoyoshi and Kuma regions. The fact that the series' creator, Yuki Midorikawa, was born and raised in this region explains the source of the enchanting natural landscapes and mystical atmosphere in her works. Within the scope of the tour, iconic spots that inspired the adventures of Natsume Takashi and Nyanko-sensei, such as Hitoyoshi Station, Tengu Bridge, and the Kuma River, will be visited. Additionally, the legendary Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine, where the Hotarubi no Mori e film, which left a deep mark on the hearts of viewers, takes place, will be one of the most important stops on the route.
For the Kumamoto region, this project is not just a tourism event, but also a symbol of recovery. The Hitoyoshi region, which was affected by the major flood disaster in 2020, has been healing its wounds for a long time with the support of Natsume Yuujinchou fans. While anime tourism (Seichi Junrei) provides a lifeline to the regional economy, a coordinated effort is being carried out with the Kumagawa Railway, which is expected to return to full capacity in 2026. Fans will have the opportunity to get to know the local culture, traditional handicrafts, and unique local delicacies while following the traces of the spiritual beings (Youkai) in the series.
Specially designed buses decorated with illustrations of the characters wearing local-motif yukata will be used as part of the project. While limited-edition souvenirs and special guidebooks will be offered to participants, it was reported that reservations will open as of April 23, 2026. If you want to step into the peaceful world of Natsume and feel the sad story of Gin and Hotaru on-site, the Kumamoto route should definitely be on your list this summer.
