Nippon Sangoku Climbs to the Top of the Spring 2026 Anime Charts: A Triumph of Political Drama

Nippon Sangoku (The Three Nations of the Crimson Sun) pulled off a major surprise by landing in 4th place on Anime News Network's "Best of Spring 2026" list for the week of April 29 to May 5. In a season dominated by action and fantasy worlds, the fact that such a heavy political drama has ranked so high proves the deep impact the series has left on viewers. This rise, especially following the 5th episode, shows how much fans have embraced the complex structure of the story.
The original manga, created by Ikka Matsuki and serialized since 2021 on Shogakukan's MangaONE and Ura Sunday platforms, focuses on a Japan that has collapsed following nuclear war and natural disasters. In this dystopian future where the country is divided into three rival states called Yamato, Takeo, and Seii, our protagonist Aoteru Misumi (voiced by Kensho Ono) aims to reunite the country using his intellect and oratorical skills instead of brute force. The animation, handled by Studio Kafka (The Ancient Magus' Bride), presents a visual feast by combining the original drawing style of the manga with a "moving manga" aesthetic.
One of the biggest contributors to the series' success is the technical staff. Kazuaki Terasawa sits in the director's chair, while the music bears the signature of legendary composer Kevin Penkin, known for works like Made in Abyss. Nippon Sangoku is not just a war story; it also serves as a harsh critique of corruption, bureaucracy, and societal collapse. Viewers find the protagonist's use of "words instead of weapons" to be a breath of fresh air that breaks the conventional molds of the genre.
