The Giant Behind Doraemon and Crayon Shin-chan: Shin-Ei Animation Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary!

Shin-Ei Animation, the studio behind some of the most iconic works in the anime world, is preparing to celebrate its half-century history! Founded on September 9, 1976, and now operating as a subsidiary of TV Asahi, the studio has announced that it will launch seven major projects to excite its fans on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. These projects include a special commemorative video (PV), a comprehensive exhibition event, and an entirely new short anime project. With these celebrations, the studio aims to both honor its past legacy and showcase its future vision.
Looking at the studio's history, Shin-Ei Animation was actually born as the successor to A Production, which was founded in 1965. After leaving Toei Animation, founder Daikichirō Kusube wanted to create an independent structure and restructured the studio under its current name in 1976. The studio's real breakthrough came with the Doraemon series, which began in 1979 and continues to this day. Shortly after, with the broadcast of Crayon Shin-chan in 1992, the studio became one of Japan's undisputed leaders in family and children's animation. These two giant series have become a part of the childhood memories of millions of children not only in Japan but all over the world.
However, Shin-Ei Animation is not limited to nostalgic productions. In recent years, it has continued its success with modern hits such as Teasing Master Takagi-san (Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san) and the highly popular The Dangers in My Heart (Boku no Kokoro no Yabai Yatsu). The seven projects announced as part of the 50th-anniversary celebrations include collaborations with the local government of Nishitokyo, where the studio is based, as well as digital archive projects, special merchandise collections, and fan meet-ups. The exhibition event, which will be spread across 2025 and 2026, is expected to feature rare sketches and behind-the-scenes footage from the studio's fifty-year production history.
This major milestone serves as a reminder of how deep the roots of the anime industry truly are. Shin-Ei Animation officials, while thanking fans for their support, state that the new short anime project will reflect the studio's characteristic style filled with humor and warmth. More information regarding the details of the projects and the release date of the new anime is expected to be shared in the coming months. If you grew up with Nobita's adventures or laughed at Shin-chan's mischief, these celebrations will be just for you!
