First Images from THE ONE PIECE Remake Arrive: WIT Studio and Netflix Make a Modern Start

One Piece, one of the world's most popular manga series, is returning with a massive project that has fans buzzing as it celebrates its 25th anniversary. The first concept designs and character sketches from the remake project titled THE ONE PIECE, prepared in collaboration with Netflix and WIT Studio, have been shared. This new series aims to retell Eiichiro Oda's immortal work from the very beginning, starting with the East Blue Saga, using modern animation technology.
The team behind the project consists of highly ambitious names. WIT Studio, known for masterpieces like Attack on Titan (seasons 1-3) and Vinland Saga, has placed Masashi Koizuka in the director's chair for this project. While Taku Kishimoto, known for Haikyu!!, is responsible for the series composition, Kyoji Asano, who helped define the visual language of Attack on Titan, is handling character design. In the newly shared teaser video, the updated looks of iconic characters like Monkey D. Luffy, Roronoa Zoro, and Nami, along with impressive "image board" works reflecting the world of the series, stand out.
So, why make a new version when there is already an ongoing anime that has surpassed 1100 episodes? While the original Toei Animation production that began in 1999 holds nostalgic value, the image quality and pacing of the older episodes can fall behind today's standards. THE ONE PIECE aims to present the story at a more fluid pace, stripped of unnecessary filler scenes and enhanced with modern visual effects, with the goal of both winning over a new generation of viewers and providing a fresh experience for long-time fans. When this project was announced, Eiichiro Oda raised expectations to the highest level by saying, "Get ready for a One Piece experience like you've never seen before."
