Comiket Returns to a 3-Day Format After 5 Years: The Massive Event Returns to Its Former Glory

Comic Market (commonly known as Comiket), where the heart of the anime and manga world beats, is making a major comeback. According to the official announcement, Comiket 105, which will be held this coming winter, will open its doors for three full days from December 29th to 31st. This decision is seen as a giant step toward the event regaining its former glory, moving away from the limited two-day format implemented in the post-pandemic period.
Comiket 97, held in 2019, set a record by lasting four days. However, the global pandemic that began in 2020 led to the event being canceled or held in much smaller, two-day formats. This new event, which will take place at the Tokyo Big Sight exhibition center, will have a three-day schedule for the first time in five years. Organizers state that this expansion will both increase the number of participants and create more space for independent artists (circles) to showcase their work.
Comiket is not just a shopping event; it is also the greatest representative of Japan's "otaku" culture. Welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, the fair hosts a wide range of participants, from independent illustrators to professional game companies. The return to a three-day format is proof of the economic revival in the sector and the intense demand for physical events. Specifically, the daily visitor capacity expected for C105 is aimed to be distributed more evenly compared to previous two-day events.
For fans, this news means more cosplay space, more dōjinshi, and less stress from crowds. Starting on December 29th and ending on the last day of the year, December 31st, the event is preparing to bid farewell to 2026 with a grand celebration. Details regarding ticket sales and participant applications are expected to be shared by the Comic Market Preparatory Committee in the coming months. If you are planning to be in Tokyo this winter, it is worth marking your calendars now!
