Elden Ring is Being Adapted for the Cinema: Release Date and Star-Studded Cast Announced!

The Elden Ring universe, which shook the gaming world, is finally being brought to the big screen! Bandai Namco and A24 have officially announced that the highly anticipated live-action film adaptation will be released on March 3, 2028. The film, which will be directed and written by visionary director Alex Garland—known for cult productions such as Ex Machina, Annihilation, and Civil War—will be shot in IMAX format with a massive budget. Filming is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2026.
The film's cast is truly a parade of stars. Kit Connor, who gained worldwide fame with Heartstopper, Cailee Spaeny, the successful star of Alien: Romulus, veteran actor Ben Whishaw, and Nick Offerman, who is remembered for his performance in The Last of Us series, are among the prominent names in the cast. Additionally, important names such as Tom Burke, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz, and Peter Serafinowicz will bring the mysterious atmosphere of The Lands Between to life. Although it has not yet been announced which actor will play which character, fans have already begun to theorize about who will play iconic figures such as Malenia or Ranni.
This massive adaptation crowns the success of FromSoftware's game, which was released in 2022 and has sold over 30 million copies worldwide. This rich mythology, created by the game's director Hidetaka Miyazaki and Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, offers unique potential for a cinematic narrative. Having a prestigious studio like A24 behind the project and George R.R. Martin himself among the producers increases hopes that the game's dark, melancholic, and epic atmosphere will be faithfully preserved. It is also stated that the strategic partnership between Kadokawa and Sony is part of a strategy to expand such major IPs on a global scale.
The visual aesthetic that Alex Garland has previously displayed in science fiction and drama genres could find a great harmony with Elden Ring's fragmented and mysterious storytelling. Director Garland stated that he is a huge fan of the game and has already finished it seven times, noting that he sees Malenia as the most challenging enemy. While the biggest curiosity for fans of the game is how the silent nature of the main character, the Tarnished, will be reflected in the film, the fact that a 160-page epic script draft is ready has raised expectations to the peak. The first visuals and trailers to come from the production in the coming years will herald one of the biggest meetings of the cinema and gaming worlds.
