Legendary Artist John Byrne Returns to Marvel with X-Men Elsewhen: Rewriting the Dark Phoenix Story

The comic book world is being shaken up! Legendary writer and artist John Byrne, who propelled X-Men to the top in the 1970s and 80s, is returning to the Marvel world after a nearly 25-year hiatus. Announced in collaboration with Abrams ComicArts and Marvel, X-Men Elsewhen will be released as a massive three-volume graphic novel series. The first volume will hit shelves in June 2026, and this project will offer an alternative ending to one of the most iconic stories in comic book history, the Dark Phoenix Saga.
So, why is this project so exciting? John Byrne was one of the creators who, along with Chris Claremont in 1980, crafted the original story that ended with the tragic death of Jean Grey. However, Byrne had always expressed that the story did not end the way he wanted due to editorial pressures at the time. X-Men Elsewhen presents a "what if?" scenario that branches off exactly from Uncanny X-Men #136. In this universe, Jean Grey does not die, but she survives with her mental capacity reduced to that of a five-year-old due to the influence of the Phoenix force. Professor Charles Xavier and his team struggle to heal Jean while facing new dangers that threaten the entire Marvel Universe.
The origin of the project is based on a rather interesting "fan-creator" interaction. Byrne first began sharing this story on his own forum, Byrne Robotics, in 2018, purely as a hobby and in black-and-white sketches. Reaching 32 issues in a short time and becoming a phenomenon among fans, this work has gained official status with Marvel's licensing support. Professionally colored (by Lovern Kindzierski) and inked (by Paul Wills), this series will contain over 600 pages of new content. Regarding this return, Byrne shared his excitement concisely, saying, "They say you can't go home again, they are wrong."
X-Men Elsewhen will not be limited to the story of the mutants; other Marvel icons such as Fantastic Four, Avengers, and Spider-Man will also appear in this alternative history. The publication schedule for the series is quite clear: the first volume will be released in June 2026, the second in the fall of 2026, and the final volume in the spring of 2027. If you have missed the classic X-Men aesthetic of the 80s and Byrne's unique storytelling style, this series will be a true treasure in the modern comic book world.
