Kadokawa Prepares for Retail Revolution in North America: New Company "Kadokawa Retail Ventures" Established

Kadokawa, one of Japan's largest media and publishing giants, has taken a major step to increase its influence in the North American market through physical stores. The company announced that it has established a new subsidiary called Kadokawa Retail Ventures, LLC (KRV) to consolidate and expand its retail operations under one roof. This new entity, which became official in February 2026, will take over the management of Manga Spot bookstores from Kadokawa World Entertainment.
The new company is led by Kurt Hassler, an experienced industry figure who also oversees publishing at Yen Press. Hassler emphasized that this move is part of Kadokawa's "Global Media Mix" strategy and that direct contact with fans is critical for growth. Manga Spot first opened its doors at Columbus Circle in New York in October 2023 and quickly gained popularity, reaching 10 different locations today.
This move by Kadokawa is not just a management change, but also a solution to the shortage of physical stores in the region. While the market for printed manga and light novels is growing rapidly with the explosion of anime popularity in North America, the number of physical stores where fans can directly access these products and exclusive licensed merchandise remains limited. Kadokawa Retail Ventures aims to fill this gap by aggressively expanding its store network and offering experiences such as special events and signed merchandise in stores, not just books.
This strategic expansion aligns with other steps Kadokawa has taken in the US market in recent years. The company already holds a majority stake in Yen Press, acquired J-Novel Club in 2021, and purchased the renowned news platform Anime News Network. Furthermore, the strategic partnership established with Sony in early 2025 allows Kadokawa to distribute its content much more powerfully on a global scale. For fans, this means more Manga Spot stores, exclusive figures, and special editions of beloved series will be much more accessible in the future.
