Isekai Saturation and Activist Investors at Kadokawa: FromSoftware's Future Debated

Kadokawa, one of the most powerful players in the anime and manga world, is experiencing turbulence on both the creative and financial fronts. The recent surge of the isekai genre, with dozens of new productions every season, has created a serious saturation in the company's portfolio. Moreover, this issue is not only among viewers; it is also causing discomfort among Kadokawa's partners.
Industry analysts speaking to Anime News Network state that Kadokawa has greenlit and released many series that have received the 'another isekai' reaction in recent years. This situation negatively affects not only the quality of the genre but also the company's brand perception. On the other hand, activist investor pressure on FromSoftware (creator of Elden Ring and Dark Souls series) is increasing. Investors want the studio to either pursue more profitable projects while maintaining its independence or be sold entirely.
According to our research, Kadokawa holds major isekai series such as Overlord, Konosuba, and Re:Zero. However, recent releases like The Weakest Tamer and Chillin’ in Another World are criticized for repeating the same formula rather than pushing the genre's boundaries. This also makes it difficult for studios to allocate resources to innovative projects. Although Kadokawa's media mix strategy (manga, anime, game, film) brings global success, declining content quality may lead to audience loss in the long run.
On the FromSoftware front, the situation is more complicated. Although the company achieved success with Armored Core VI after Elden Ring, activist investors threaten the studio's independent spirit. While Kadokawa management wants to keep FromSoftware and preserve creative freedom, shareholders' profit expectations create pressure. Industry experts say that in the coming months, Kadokawa needs to diversify its portfolio and turn to genres other than isekai (sci-fi, psychological thriller). Otherwise, a similar crisis seems inevitable to deepen on both the anime and game sides.
