Marvelous and Vanillaware Announce Muramasa: Revenant Blades

Muramasa: Revenant Blades has been officially announced by Japanese game studio Vanillaware and publisher Marvelous. The game will be released in the first quarter of 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC.
Vanillaware is a studio known for its hand-drawn 2D art and fluid animations. It previously created cult classics such as Odin Sphere, Dragon's Crown, and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. The Muramasa series first debuted in 2009 on Nintendo Wii as Muramasa: The Demon Blade and later came to PS Vita. The new game will be a continuation of the series both visually and story-wise.
The announcement was made at a recent event held by Marvelous. The company stated that the game's story will take place in feudal Japan and that players will be able to control different sword spirits. Muramasa: Revenant Blades will bring the series' signature fast-paced hack-and-slash combat system to modern platforms. Additionally, the game will leverage new-generation hardware to target 4K resolution and 60 FPS performance.
For Vanillaware fans, this news represents a long-awaited return. The studio had not announced a major new game since 2019's 13 Sentinels. Muramasa: Revenant Blades is also poised to be one of the first major third-party titles for the Nintendo Switch 2. Although the release date has not been finalized, early 2027 is a realistic timeframe considering the studio's commitment to quality.
More footage and details are expected from Marvelous and Vanillaware in the coming months. The first major event to showcase the game will likely be Tokyo Game Show or a Nintendo Direct. Fans of the series and Vanillaware enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting this new adventure.
